Although James Stringfield had moved to Barren Co, Ky, before the 1800
census of Buncombe Co, we submit these records as proof of the ancestry
of the Brittain families of Buncombe and Henderson Counties, NC.
The first record of James Stringfield is his birth in Surry Co, Virginia
19 December 1735, a son of Richard and Mary (Pettus) Stringfield.
James is mentioned in his father's Will filed 29 July 1747 in Northampton
Co, VA.This will is on file in the NC Archives, North Carolina Wills, Vol.
XXX, p66.
James Stringfield was living in Rowan Co, NC, in 1774 and was a witness
to the Will of Joseph Brittain.
James Stringfield filed two entries for land in Burke Co, NC. #701,
p. 234, 500 acres mill fork of Hunting Creek beginning at Joseph Morgan's...George
Killons land, and James Jewell, entered 28 Aug. 1778, #701, p. 235, 200
acres south fork of south fork of Catawba River on Walnut Branch including
Walnut Mt. 17 Aug. 1778.
James Stringfield was granted 200 acres in Burke Co. dated 30 Nov. 1778.
This was Grant #1092. June 1, 1787, Burke Co. Statement of deeds....Sam'l
Hughes, Jno. Hughes and Jas Stringfield, to Morganton Commissioners.
James Stringfield is on the 1790 census of Rutherford Co., Morgan's District,
living near James Brittain, Sr., and the Boyleston, Bodyston families.
James Stringfield, Sr. appears on Buncombe Co. deeds from 1792 through
1794. He is also on many court minutes as jury duty, road work, etc.
He moved to Barren Co, Ky, between 1795 and 1800, and died there after
1815.
James Stringfield's wife was Mary Ann Ray, born 27 Nov. 1738, Queen Ann
Co, MD, and died at the home of a daughter in Warren Co, Ky, 13 July 1813.

Co, Ky;
m. Nancy Simmons, went to Illinois.

Ray Stringfield, b. ca 1767; m. Maria Love.
4. Nancy
Stringfield, no birthdate found; m. Elias McFaddin.
5. Delilah
Stringfield, no birthdate found; m. James Brittain.
6. Bida
Stringfield, married a Downs.
