| William Shope
was born in Albemarle County, Virginia ca 1788; and died in Buncombe County,
Feb 18, 1872. He was the son of John Shope Jr. and Sarah "Sally"
(Gragg) Shope.
William married Elizabeth "Betsy" Stroup (b. ca 1799, Lincoln Co, NC; d.
Apr 15, 1872, Buncombe Co., NC). Family history says that she is
the daughter of Joseph Stroup (1766-1851) and Catherine (Creasman) Stroup
(1777-1864). Joseph was born in Lincoln Co, NC; Catherine was born in Hampshire
Co, Virginia. Joseph and Catherine are buried at Stroup's Chapel
Baptist Church, Bull Creek Road, Asheville, NC
William and Betsy had six known children: Andrew Jackson (b. Dec
29, 1813; d. Sep 29, 1885) who married Tempy Catherine Gragg; Wiliam Riley
(b. Sept. 10, 1819; d. Jan. 14, 1894) who married Minerva E. Gragg; Leander
Erwin (b. Apr 4, 1821; d. Jan 22, 1894) who married 1st Sarah Ann Allexander,
and 2nd Tudy Mary Jane Creighton/Crichton; Hosea Alexander (b. Jan. 1,
1823; d. Feb 2, 1897) who married Emeline C. Gragg; Mitchell (b. 1825;
d. ?) who married Mary "Polly" Ann Dillingham; and Doctor Vance (b. Aug
24, 1828; d. Dec. 23, 1903) who married Harriet Eliza Alexander.
William and Betsy are buried at Swannanoa Presbyterian Church, Asheville,
NC.
