CHAMBERS FAMILY Mon, 23 Nov 1998  -- (1). I am trying to establish the relation- ship between the 5 male Chambers listed on the 1800 Asheville Town census.  I believe James was Joseph's  son, but is there also a relationship between them and John, William and Elihu? (2) I am also trying to determine if William is my gggg-grandfather.  Can you determine if he had a son named Thomas?  Thomas was to have married a girl by the name of Katie Lawson in Buncombe Co. in the mid to late 1790's. Thank you,  Greg Chambers   2580 Sunderland Dr.  Martinsville IN 46151
OWEN Fri, 20 Nov 1998-- My great- grandfather was, according to records in Santa Barbara, CA, where he ended up, born in Buncombe Co., NC, about 1816.  His name was William Rensselaer Owen, and he had a brother - or maybe half-brother, Benjamin Franklin Owen.  Both are described in separate regional California history books as "colorful characters".  (My brother, my father, and I are considered pretty "colorful", too, so we're told.) The following quote from said William Rensselaer Owen appears in one of these old California books: "I was born in North Carolina, County of Bunkum (sic), near the mouth of Bull Creek, between Upper and Lower Hog Thief, right at Screamville and am always known as 'By Crout' (sic)."  Here are our questions:  1)  Is this description of place somewhere that actually exists out there, or is this his "creative fiction"?  2)  If it does exist, where is it?  We couldn't find any of these names(!) on any maps we have.  3)  Any ideas what the expression "By Crout" means, and where it comes from?  I'm guessing it's a corruption of "by kraut" and has something to do with Germans, but really don't know.  Is it a common expression in western North Carolina?  4)  Anybody have any idea who the parents of these 2 "colorful characters" were?  5)  Any ideas as to why these 2 "ran away" to California circa 1850?  Would love to hear from anybody who knows something or thinks they might, Margaret Owen Thorpe

I am told there may be some Native American blood but do not know what degree.  I am wondering if That is why I can't find anything.  I have checked Bob Blankenships book, Cherokee Roots Volume 1 and I noticed many different Maney's none were named Joe or Joesph Maney.  I am also wondering if maybe Joe was not actually his middle name that he just went by instead by his first. Ida married William Banks in Buncombe Co. NC on May 17 1902. According to Ida's death cert. Both of her parents were from Buncombe Co.  But I know that just because it says so it still may not be true.  Anything  any one might have on this family would be great.  Thanks, sincerely, Kimberly Knapp

STRAW
BURTON
HURTT
Thu, 5 Nov 1998 -- Hello! I am a beginning genealogist, searching for my Great- grandmother and Great-grandfather.  I know very little about my ggrandfather.  He appears in the 1910 census in Bay City, MI  ,  where I live. But my ggrandmother and he were married in Buncombe Co.  My ggrandmother states in a memoir dated 1930 that she was raised in the area of Sandy Mush. She then moved to Asheville app. 14 years later.  Her maiden name was Margaret Delia Straw.  She married a man named Burton who was "killed" .  Then shortly after his death , married another man named William C. Hurtt, my ggrandfather.  She tells a story of her parents dying when she and her only brother were very young, living with her grandmother, then an aunt who didn't like children. The aunt gave or sold her away into bondage to a house near Asheville,  where people would sometimes come to vacation.  I have not yet looked at the census for Buncombe County.  Her birth year was abt. 1878.  Marriages were abt.1898.  Margaret & William then moved to MI where they raised five children.  If anyone may have info relating to this family, I would greatly appreciate it.  I cannot go farther back on this side of my family, until I find more clues to this mystery.   Debbie  Courier

ORR
Robert Orr family
27 Jun 1998 - Of particular delight to us is the Orr Cemetery in Little River.  My great great grandmother, Margaret "Emily" Orr is buried there.  I have her portrait and personal bible.  Although the grave was never marked we know quite a bit about her.   She was born in 1845, the daugher of Samuel Orr and Lizzie Fletcher.  She first married Hezekiah Americus Heath and had a son Joseph Walter Heath.  After Mr. Heath died she married William Henry Pridmore and had two sons (my great grandfather) John Samuel Pridmore (1874) and William Washington Pridmore (1876).  She died very young at 34 years of age.  A true daugher of two patriots, Robert Orr and Lambert Clayton, she is my favorite ancestor.  John Samuel moved to SC to work in the mill, he married Victoria Howard, and they had one son, (my grandfather) James Walter Pridmore. Grandpa's daughter, (my mother) Erlean Pridmore, married "back into"  the SC Orr family of Thomas Orr in 1951.  My Daughter, Emily Orr, named for the original, enjoys all of this a lot! We have some very nice 1922 box camera pictures of Little River which have never been published and would like to correspond with interested parties.  Jimmy Orr

Subject:  -- Asheville Medallion 21 Jun 1998 - From: Woodchippy@aol.comI wonder if you might help me solve a riddle in our family.  An old medallion has shown up in some family belongings and we don't know how it ties to our family. On one side it has "City of Asheville, North Carolina 1797-1883"  then some engraving that appears to be Latin. The other side has  "Second Reunion 30th Division - Old Hickory Assn. Asheville, NC Sept 28, 29, 1920"
It is about one inch in diameter, and made of brass and/or bronze.
If you could tell me the significance of it, the occasion of it being made or something, it might give me a clue as to why it was where it was.  And, I don't understand that ending date by the name Asheville.  I assume the beginning date is when Asheville was established.  Do you know what the Old Hickory Assn. was? Thank you for any help you may be. Edna Clack Woodchippy@aol.com

My mother is in a nursing home and has senile dementia.  She has, until now, never mentioned her family.  She has talked of a Julius,(her grandfather?), Lily, her mother, and Roxanna (Roxy), her grandmother?.  They were farmers.  Her grandparents raised her.  I do not even know if their surname is Rector.  I would like to find someone who has information on this family before my mother dies.  After she graduated from high school, she and a girl- friend moved to Macon, Georgia and attended a business school.  She met and married my Father, Robert Emory Davis. FOSTER, GRAMLING 18 Jun 1998 - BettyJDill@aol.com   In the May issue of "A Lot of Bunkum," there is a family list for Enoch George Foster. I would like to hear from anyone who is familiar with this family. I don't believe the Enoch George Foster in Henderson County, NC, in 1850, is the Enoch George Foster, son of John and Sidney Foster of Amelia Co., VA, and Spartanburg Co., SC.  E.G., son of John and Sidney married Mary Magdalene Gramling, who was born in Spartanburg 15 Jan 1802 and died 13 Nov 1857. Her birth and death dates are in her father, Adam Gramling, Jr.'s Bible Record, preserved at Wofford College in Spartanburg. Adam Gramling, Jr., in his will, left slaves to the children of his deceased daughter, "Polly" Foster.  E.G. may have  been in Texas by 1850 and with a different list of children. After Mary Magdalene's death, E.G. married Susan A. Edwards and had 5 more children. If my records are incorrect, I sure would like to have info to make them correct.  Betty Jean Foster Dill, 168 Bullington Road  Spartanburg, SC  29306-6308 BettyJDill@aol.com

LITTLEFIELD
23 May 1998 - Mary Leah GREENE (1855-1924) the wife of William Henry DEAVER (1844/1846--Jun 13, 1915), was the d/o Judge Joseph GREEN, Sr. (1821-1897).  She had a brother Joseph.  Judge Joseph GREEN, Sr. m. Catherine (Katherine) Harrill(Harrell)Aug 9, 1855 in Rutherford Co., NC.  The family historian tells us that Judge Joseph GREEN, Sr. is the s/o George Washington GREENE  &  Katherine BAXTER; that George Washington GREENE is the s/o of Nathaniel GREENE, Jr.; and Nathaniel GREENE, Jr. is the s/o Major General Nathaniel GREENE & Kitty Littlefield. We want to prove this, but here are our problems:
*Where is the record of Joseph's birth?
*How could George Washington GREENE have a son in 1821 when he was only b. in 1811?
*George Washington GREENE b. & d. in East Greenwich, Kent, RI.  so when could he marry Kathryn Baxter and have son Joseph who lived in Rutherford, NC?
*Where is the record of George Washington GREENE's  marriage to Kathryn BAXTER?
*Where are there any credible records of the existence of a Kathryn BAXTER? Would appreciate an email if you know anything about this.

SPENGEL
9 May 1998 - In the May 98 issue of A Lot of Bunkum, p. 61, there is a collapsed ancestor chart of Catherine Belle King.  The names Garren and Rhodes are of interest to me.  Jacob Rhodes is on the 1820 thry 1840 censuses for Buncombe County. Is there someone I can make contact with associated with the published "Collapsed Ancestor Chart" for relative information?  I have also been unable to find George W. and Jane after the 1860 census.Jacob Rhodes, according to info I have received, married Christina Garren (b. 11 Feb 1799) d/o John Garren (b. 18 Feb 1769; d. 14 Apr 1843) and Hannah Fouts (b. 11 July 1771; d. Nov 1855) d/o David and Catherine (Spengel) Fouts.Jacob has been tentatively identified as the father of my great grandfather, William M. Rhopdes (b. 5 Feb 1822, Asheville, NC) There is also a George W. and Jane Rhodes on the 1850 and 1860 Buncombe census that is likely a brother. William M. Rhodes and Margaret Ann Parker were married 18 Jan 1945 in Burke Co., NC
There is also a Jacob Rhodes that married a Winifred Bentley in 1802 and Fannie Bentley in 1805 in Lincoln Co., which seems near to Buncombe and Burke. I am at a dead end on Jacob, and trying to learn when and where he arrived in the US from England.  I was given the name of Tutwiler Collection of Southern History and Literature byt the OBCGS office, but have not been able to locate a copy near here. The descendants of Jacob Rhodes at the bottom of my famiuly Home page may shed a little more light on my problem. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/r/h/o/Roy-B-Rhodes/

Allen. Traditionally, it has been handed- down to my generation that one of my grandfather's changed his name from Peabody to Allen.  Since I have been unable to find information which shows Nathan O's parents, I am assuming that he was the grandfather who changed his name. REECE
Reese/Rees/Rease
21 Apr 1998 -  I am researching  the surname REECE, VA, NC, TN & MO.   My GGG grandparents on the Reece side were Jesse Reece b. circa 1793 in VA and Dicy (surname unknown) b. circa 1790 in NC.  They had three children; Almeda (my GG-grandmother) b. 14 JUN 1825, Rhea Co, TN;  Amanda REECE b. 17 SEP 1839, Lauderdale Co, AL; and Washington Lafayette REECE, b. 6 APR 1833, Sumner, TN.
It appears that Jesse's father may have been named Isham or Jesse.  Also, have  information that suggests that the REECE's came from PA to VA, to western NC.  Some of them left NC for  Jefferson Co, TN and eventually settling in Rhea Co,  TN before they moved on to Missouri.  It appears that there were several REECE/REESE families that left TN for MO between 1835 and 1845.  The name Isham, Jesse, William, Henry, and Isham, Jr. are listed. I am sure that they were all related.  I know that my GGGgrandfather, Jesse was born in VA and the family went to NC where he met Dicy ??, but all that is sketchy at best. I do have land, tax, court records while they were in Rhea Co, TN, in the 1820s. Jesse & Dicy are burried it the REECE Family Cemetary in Johnson Co, MO.
There is a family legend that there is a Cherokee connection.  I would appreciate any information that  would/could  be share.  I have hundreds of the descentants of Jesse and Dicy but not much before Jesse.  Please respond to e-mail: ThomasH890@aol.com or snail mail:  Thomas R. Hudson,   2515 Paxton Street, Woodbridge, VA 22192 (703) 490-6586.   Thank you.Tom

HYATT I can't find much info on my grandfather, Walter Lee Hyatt. In a 1900 Polk Co., TN census, he is listed as living with to older brothers, Lea Hyatt (*head of household, wife Bessie McGee Hyatt - Poley Hyatt (?) brother and Walter Hyatt (age 14 in 1900) All three brothers list themselves as being born in Indiana Co. unknown. In 1910 my grandfather, Walter L. Hyatt (same Co., and state) is head of household with wife Alice Margaret Reiordan Hyatt and daughter, Nora and Maudie. My father, J. D. Hyatt (James Daniel Hyatt, Sr.) Was born in 1910, in Isabella, TN, Polk Co. In the 1900 census of Polk Co., TN all three brothers state their father was born in NC and that their mother was born in GA, but in1910 census my grandfather states different states. Could it be he might have really known where he was born? I loose Lea Hyatt completely after 1900, on census and where he died and was buried. Poley Hyatt I have no clues whatsoever. On my grandfather's death certificate his eldest daughter, Nora Hyatt Humphrey states that a John Hyatt was their (Walter, Lea, etc) father - mother unknown. On Lea Hyatt and Bessie McGee Hyatt's marriage certificate (Polk Co., TN) a Robert Hyatt was a witness. Could this be another brother, or perhaps the father? Please Help!!! I quit searching 6 years ago to help raise grandchildren and now have time to resume one of my other "loves and hobbies", compiling our paternal family tree. WALLACE Date: Tue, 03 Mar 1998 16:57:48 -0500
   From: Leonard <leonard@greenbelt.com>
In the 1840 Census, the Jonathan Wallace Family was shown in Buncombe County N.C.as follows:
Male- 1 40-49 years    Female- 1 20-29 years
      2 15-19 years            2  0-4  years
      2 10-14 years
We know that he was born in N.C. He and his family moved to HawkinsCounty, Tennessee sometime between 1840-1843.
The following data shows in the 1850 census for Hawkins County District 14:
Family #      Name          Age Sex   Occ.  Birthpl.
-------------------------------------------------------
  156    Wallace, Jonathan   63  M   Farmer    NC
                  Martha     32  F             NC
                  Selina     11  F             NC
                  Dinah       9  F             NC
                  Jonathan    7  M             TN
                  William     5  M             TN
                  Catherine   3  F             TN

  157    Wallace, Riley      23  M   Laborer   NC
                  Jane       21  F             TN
                  Jackson     1  M             TN

  158    Wallace, Thomas     21  M   Laborer   NC
Sparks,  John       18  M   Laborer   NC
                  Anna       20  F             TN

We assume the Jonathan Sr. Married a second time. Martha was 22 when Jonathan Sr. was 53 in the 1840 timeframe.
We also assume that Riley and Thomas were sons of Jonathan Sr. in his first marriage since they lived close by in the 1850 census.  They also match the ages in the 1840 NC census.
We know that Martha (Jonathan died?) brought her family across the Cumberland Gap in the 1850's and settled in Kentucky.  I have visited her gravesite.  Unfortunately, we do not know her maiden name.
We also know that Jonathan Jr. was in the Civil War.  He was in the 1st Battery of the Kentucky Light Art. and wounded at the Battle of Stone's River, TN around 1/1/63.  He was also charged with mutiny and sentenced to 3 months hard labor.  I have visited the National Archives and viewed numerous documents relating to him.
The only thing I can find before 1840 was a John Wallace b) 12/14/1786 to a William Wallace and Phereby Brinson in Onslow Co., NC.  The dates match up but there's no way to know if it's him.
I would appreciate any help in finding out about Jonathan Wallace and his family before 1840.
Thank You!

CLAYTON
DAVIDSON
BREVARD
8 Mar 1998 17:21:01 EST - Sarah DAVIDSON Clayton: what I'm searching for is proof of who her parents are.  Everybody in the world knows that they were John Davidson and Nancy Brevard (daughter of John Brevard).  Unfortunately all the hard proof and everything else on John Davidson and Nancy Brevard is that they were the same age or younger than she.  The Old Buncombe County Society even has her written up on the Web page quoting from Maxwell's et. al. "The  Antecendants and Descendants of Lambert Clayton and Sarah Davidson", giving her parents as John Davidson and Nancy Brevard, daughter of John Brevard.   But John Davidson and Nancy Brevard had a 1779 Marriage Bond in Rowan County, NC (Sarah was 20 years old in 1779); and John Davidson, Anne Davidson and a six month old child were killed by the Indians in the spring of 1783.Now, I know that this is more than you ever wanted to know; but I don't know how to put it.  I'm really not researching the Davidsons (I have tons of material on them); I really don't want to hear about Maxwell's work, or Arthur's History of Western North Carolina, or the Signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration; or the Defenders of Kings Mountain, etc.  If I sound frustrated I am.  I will  share what I have on the Davidsons.Virginia Green -- Tampa, FL  <GGreen2158@aol.com>

I am looking for any info or leads on BENJAMIN DAVIS (1771 -1843) married to CLOA DAVIS (1777-1858).  Sometime after 1800 they moved to Buncombe (Asheville) NC with one son DAVID DAVIS (1799-1858).  Five children were born during the period that they lived in Asheville.  ISAAC DAVIS (1803-1825) , CYNTHIA S. DAVIS  (1804-1822), WILLIAM JEFFERSON DAVIS (1806-1828), JANE DAVIS (1811-1828), and ALFRED DAVIS (1812-1832).  Both Isaac and William list Asheville, NC as their place of birth in later census.  The other 3 list NC.  By 1818 they had moved to White County, TN. If you are also searching during this period, perhaps you have run across them?  They were farmers and should have had land (although I have not be able to find any listing of it in Raleigh, NC) Also, do you know of any newspapers during that period that were written in that area of the state? Any info or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you! Kit Davis

DAVIS URIAH 1732----1 Aug 1998 - Uriah Davis migrated to WNC around 1790-1800 from Iredell County,NC. We think he may have been born to Uriah and Margaret Davis in Baltimore County,MD. They had 11 children: William,Soloman, Uriah, Diana, Shadrack, Rachel, Meshack, Mara, Abendego, Joshaway and Susana. It is prob. that several of the sons: Uriah, William, Soloman, Meshack and Joshaway lived in Iredell during the late 1700's.  We have documentation that Uriah Davis,my g.g.grandfather settled in Hominey Valley,NC in Buncombe.  He was married to Elizabeth. Their daughter,  Hannah, w/o James Warren and their ch moved to Buncombe Co., also. There are two subsequent generations of Uriah Davises: Uriah lll m. to Millie Howell and Uriah lV m. to Rebecca Daves. Uriah lV was my grandfather and Hunley W. Davis, his 11 th child, was my father. We are trying to locate legal documentation that these Uriahs all came from the original one who left Middlesex,Eng. in 1732. We also need any info on the ch.of the original Uriah; documentation that the ones who lived in Iredell County,NC were really the same brothers who had lived in Baltimore County, MD. Any old Bibles, wills or deeds might give us clues we need to clear the doubts. Dick Davis
