William Moore was born in Ulster Ireland, and came as one of 9 brothers
(John, Thomas, Andrew, Alexander, David, Charles, James, Jason) through
Philadelphia settling on Borden's Grant in Orange Co., Va. about 1739,
according to records taken by Waddell Chalkley. The Muster Militia
Roles of 1742 list all but Charles, Jason, and James. It is also
said that a younger brother and sister followed later with their mother.
A search of records through the Genealogical Society of Ulster in 1965,
requested by a descendent Homer Clark, proved negative for locating any
evidence of the family there. It is said that the Moore's were of Scotch-Irish
extraction and were all Presbyterian. During the 16th century they
were forced to leave England to escape religious persecution.
As the Moore brothers scattered through the new land, it is thought that
William migrated to Rowan Co., N.C. about 1746. It is not known just
when Wm. Moore married his first wife Ann Cathy (daughter of George Cathy),
nor exactly when she died, but there were 6 children born to them - three
sons and three daughters, the last birthdate being 1782.
There is a clear record of Wm. Moore's marriage to Margaret Patton (daughter
of Benjamin Patton) in 1784. They also had 6 children. Their
youngest son Charles (b. 1791) was the one who inherited the family home
in Hominy Valley. Charles married Margaret Penland (b. 1789) in 1811
just prior to his serving as a Capt. in the War of 1812. From this
first marriage of Charles (the 2nd was to Lucinda Killian), there were
two children. Wm. Hamilton (b. 1812) and Rachel Evaline (b. 1814).
Wm. Hamilton married Mary Carolina Gudger (daughter of Sam. Bell Gudger)
and they had 7 children. Rachel E. married George W. Candler (b. 1808)
son of Zachariah Candler, and they also had seven children. Their
second child Margarette (b. 1836) married Thomas Jefferson Harkins (b.
1829). See H.S. Harkins sketch for continuation.
While there are no portraits or photographs of the Moores, there is a sketch
of William Moore in Wilma Dykeman's book "The French Broad," which depicts
him as a tall sturdy man with a confident expression. There are numerous
documents, letters and historical accounts of William Moore who was apparently
a tireless man in love with his new found homeland. He contributed
to governmental activities in Old Tryon Co. and the integrity of the community
as well as Presbyterian Church growth in the Hominy Valley.
Capt. William Moore received a land grant of 450 acres from Gov. Caswell
as payment of services in the Revolution. While the land grant was
given in 1784, Moore had first seen the land when he accompanied Gen. Rutherford
to the area in the fall of 1776. At that time he promised himself
that he would return to this place which he referred to as "This land of
Eden" and the "Promised Land." It was not until 1794 at the age of
68 that he returned with his family and became the first settler west of
the French Broad River.
Prepared from materials collected and now held by Jack Cole and Charles
Stanton of Asheville,
by Martha June Lamb, - all 6th generation descendents.
