27, 1757 at Bordentown, N.J. Enlisted in Rowan County, NC as a substitute
for his father, Joseph Lanning, under Capt. Robert Moore, Maj. Jas. Smith,
Col. Alex Martin, Gen. Rutherford in North Carolina Continental line and
saw service against the Tories, Cherokee and in the Battle of Stono, etc.
He married in
October 1783 in Rowan County, NC Sarah Whitaker who was born on Monday,
Dec. 7, 1767 a daughter of Joshua Sr. and
Mary Whitaker. He died on August 10, 1839 in Buncombe County, NC and
is buried in Cane Creek Batptist Church Cemetery near Fairview, NC. His
widow was living in 1843 in Buncombe County, NC.
