WILLIAM P. ABBOTT
submitted by Mary Martha (Nieblas) Brown and Loretta Elizabeth (Abbott) Phillips
William Pinkney Abbott was born January 7, 1838.  It has not been determined whether he was born in SC, GA, or TN. William was a Civil War Veteran as were his two brothers, Kims and Starlin. In later years Kims ran a General Store in Gainesville, Georgia.  William was a fairly successful farmer; his War pens- ion helped make life even more comfortable.  William also had a blacksmith shop in his home.  Some of the Abbotts raised sheep.

William's parents were Levi Abbott (1812-1885) and Dotia/ Dosha (Henderson) Abbott (1811-1888).  Dotia's maiden name has been verified by a slip of paper found in William's Bible and by the book, "The Annals of Haywood County."  Levi has a sister, Susie, who married a Watts and went to live in South Hominy.

On June 2, 1870, William married Harriet Elizabeth Rhodarmer (1851-1923), daughter of Noah and Maryann (Henson) Rhodarmer.  William died December 9, 1931.  He and Harriet are buried at Morning Star Cemetery, Canton, NC.

Oral family history says that once a year the family would travel to Georgia in a covered wagon.  It would take about a week, and they'd camp along the way.  At night they'd have to build a fire to keep the panthers away.

William and Harriet were parents of:  Mary Jane (1873-1954) who married Amos Jerome Shope; Laura (1874-1959); John Marion (1877-1956) who married 1st Bonnie Grahl, 2nd Belle Rankin; Caldonia "Donie" (1879-1958) who married S.H. Miller; and Lura (1882-1961).
